Lot #: 398 Milton Hopkins (American, 1789-1884) Portrait of Marietta Ryan |
Oil/board. Unsigned. This is a charming piece of American Folk Art from the Ex. Barber Conable Collection. The portrait has descended in Marietta’s family to her great-granddaughter before being purchased by Barber Conable, from Sotheby’s, in 1986. Hopkins’ three quarter length portrait of a girl wearing a lace trimmed gown and carrying a basket of flowers compares closely to the painting H.M. Cox, which is owned by the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute and “Girl with a Flower Basket” and “Boy Holding Dog”, which are in the collection of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Center. It is speculated that the children in the portraits owned by the AARFAC are siblings of Marietta Ryan’s. The painting has been featured in numerous exhibitions including those hosted by The Museum of Our National Heritage from September, 1988 until January, 1989 and The Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, N.Y. from November 1988 until January 1999. |
