Hanley was well educated, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree at Harvard, and later honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Arizona and St. Bonaventure University. It was during his time at Harvard that Hanley began collecting books and fine works of art. His collection of D. H. Lawrence and George Bernard Shaw is still known as one of the greatest in the world.
