1964. Carved and laminated walnut and rosewood. Stool signed and dated 'W.C. 64' Literature: Emily Evans Eerdmans, “Wendell Castle, A Catalogue Raisonné 1958-2012” Stool: pg. 88, 11.105. Music Rack: pg. 122, 11.250. “Stool was pivotal in which Castle literally shifted from sculpture to furniture during its creation. Initially, Castle conceived a sculpted base that issued branchlike limbs “I flipped it over and saw it could be a stool. I then contoured the seat, clipped the legs so they were all the same length, and it became a piece of furniture.” He continued to riff on the leg vocabulary for what became prototype for his iconic 1964 Music Rack, 11.252” Comments: Music Rack studio inventory number 234. |
