Details:

Herbert Zangs (German, 1924-2003)
Herbert Zangs was a German post-war Minimalist artist who can be readily recognized by his miniature monochromatic works. Influenced by visits to Paris, Zangs was drawn to abstract art early on. Eventually, he mastered his own style, and adhered to the “Whitenings” movement in art, where monochromatic art is exhibited with nature’s play of light and shade. He was influenced by the works of other avant-garde artists like Wols, Jackson Pollock, and Lothar Quinte. Fascinated by German Art Informel, Zangs incorporated found objects such as paper, cardboard, and fabric in his works. With monochromatic works, he became closer to the ZERO Movement, which proclaimed an artistic renewal based on themes of light and movement. Freed from all content and function, every work is the object of its process, both painting and object, experimenting with marks made by whips and windscreen wipers.
