Horace Wolcott Robbins Jr. (American, 1842-1904)
Horace Wolcott Robbins was an American landscape painter known primarily for his watercolors but also worked in oils. He was born in Mobile, Alabama, to parents from Connecticut. The family moved to Baltimore when Robbins was six, where he studied at Newton University and received drawing lessons from German landscape painter August Weidenbach. Robbins continued his art education in New York under James McDougal Hart and graduated in 1860. During the Civil War, Robbins served in the 22nd New York Regiment. After the war, he gained recognition in the art world, being elected to the Century Association and becoming an associate of the National Academy of Design. He traveled extensively, visiting Jamaica, England, the Netherlands, Paris, and Switzerland, where he studied with notable artists such as Frederic Edwin Church and Theodore Rousseau. Robbins became a prominent landscape artist, known for his watercolor depictions of the White Mountains and other scenic areas. He was also involved in art organizations like the American Watercolor Society and the National Academy of Design. In 1890, Robbins shifted his focus briefly to law, attending Columbia Law School and being admitted to the New York State Bar in 1892. He passed away in 1904.
