Mettlach Stein "Drinker with the Owner of Zur Linde"
Catalog No. 2286. Pottery, etched. Inlaid lid. 2.6 L. Text: "Angetan hat's mir dein Wein, deiner Auglein heller Schein, Lindenwirtin du Junge!" (Smitten am I with your wine, and your eyes' bright shine, Linden hostess so young!) The text on this stein is the concluding portion of the first verse from the poem "Die Lindenwirtin," written by Rudolph Baumbach in 1876 and set to music in 1878 by Franz Wilhelm Abt. The poem honors Annchen Schumacher (1860-1935), perhaps the most famous innkeeper in German history and a popular figure with German students.
