Details:

Sean Scully (American/Irish, b. 1945)
Sean Scully is an abstract painter known for his bold, geometric works featuring striped, checkerboard, and grid patterns. Inspired by memories of places like Venice and Morocco, Scully’s paintings use earthy tones such as browns, blacks, and ochres, with thick brushstrokes and layered compositions. His early works were more structured, but over time, he introduced a sense of instability, pushing the boundaries of the stripe motif he’s best known for. Scully moved to New York in 1975, where his work evolved, earning nominations for the Turner Prize in 1989 and 1993.
Scully's paintings are housed in major collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Hirshhorn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the High Museum, among others. Drawing from his travels and personal experiences, Scully's rigorous exploration of the stripe as a motif has solidified his place as one of the leading figures in contemporary abstract painting.
