Details:

Cindy Sherman (American, b. 1954)
Cindy Sherman (b. 1954, Glen Ridge, NJ) is an American photographer and filmmaker whose work critiques gender, identity, and cultural stereotypes through self-portraiture. Known for her series “Untitled Film Stills” (1977-1980), Sherman uses her own body to embody female cliches from film, television, and advertising, often playing with the artificiality of identity construction. Her early career is deeply intertwined with Buffalo's art scene. Sherman studied at Buffalo State University in the 1970s, where she, along with artists like Robert Longo, Charles Clough, and Nancy Dwyer, co-founded Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in 1974. Throughout her career, she has continued to explore themes like the grotesque and the subversion of beauty, using elaborate disguises and theatrical effects to challenge the viewer's perception of femininity and cultural norms. Sherman is one of the most influential artists of the Pictures Generation, along with figures like Longo and Sherrie Levine. Her work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including at The Museum of Modern Art and the National Portrait Gallery. Known for her provocative and often unsettling approach, Sherman has received major awards, including the MacArthur Fellowship.
