Provenance Note: The below excerpt was printed in the New York Times, Jan. 15, 1939, pg. 38, "EDGAR QUACKENBUSH, MERCHANT 70 YEARS; In Tea Trade Since He Was a Boy--Spent Long Time in China"
"Edgar Quackenbush, a tea merchant for more than seventy years, died Friday at his home, 87 Hamilton Place, in his eighty-eighth year. He was born in Jay Street, a son of David and Rachel Westervelt Quackenbush and a descendant of ancestors who came here from Holland in 1660. Entering the tea business as a boy with Hoag, Porter & Co., Mr. Quackenbush went to Shanghai in 1894, and for many years represented Carter Macy & Co. there, having entire charge of their China tea trade. He took part in the civic affairs of the Foreign Settlement, serving on its Municipal Council. Of late years he had been with the New York office of Carter Macy & Co., remaining active until a fortnight ago. Mr. Quackenbush was a Presbyterian elder for fifty-eight years and since 1917 had been clerk of the session of the Fourth Church, this city. He belonged to the Holland Society and the Tea Association of the United States. Surviving are his widow, the former Margaret Belknap; a son, E. Schuyler Quackenbush, and three daughters, Miss Helen Schuyler Quackenbush, Mrs. Thomas W. Hotchkiss and Mrs. Augustus B. Anderson."
