Details:
John Frederick Kensett was an American painter and engraver celebrated for his luminous landscapes and coastal scenes that define the Luminist style. Born in Cheshire, Connecticut, he trained as a draftsman in his father’s engraving firm before turning to painting, exhibiting his first work at the National Academy of Design in 1838. After traveling to Europe with Asher Brown Durand, Kensett refined his technique, drawing inspiration from the atmospheric precision of Thomas Cole and John Constable. Active in New York and Connecticut, he became known for his serene depictions of Lake George, the New England coast, and Long Island Sound. From his studio near Darien, he produced the celebrated “Last Summer’s Work” series before his death in 1872. His paintings now reside in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
