Details:
Walter Launt Palmer was an American artist celebrated for his luminous winter landscapes and refined interior scenes, becoming a leading figure in American Impressionism. Born in Albany, New York, and the son of sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, he trained early with Charles Elliott and Hudson River School master Frederic Edwin Church before continuing his studies in Paris under Carolus-Duran, whose tonal influence helped shape Palmer’s distinctive sensitivity to color, texture, and light.
Accepted into the National Academy of Design exhibition at just 18, he went on to enjoy a long and decorated career, earning major honors including the Second Hallgarten Prize, the W.T. Evans Prize, and medals at the Columbian World’s Fair, Pan-American Exposition, and St. Louis Exposition. Associated with artistic luminaries such as John Singer Sargent and Homer Dodge Martin, Palmer’s admired snowscapes continue to be featured in prominent collections including the Corcoran Gallery of Art and the Albright Art Gallery.
