Details:

Gustave Dore (French, 1832-1883)
Gustave Dore, born Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Dore in Strasbourg, was a French artist, engraver, illustrator, and sculptor renowned for his masterful wood and steel engravings. A prodigious talent, he began publishing illustrated stories at just fifteen and soon established himself in Paris as a leading literary illustrator, creating vivid visual interpretations of works by Rabelais, Balzac, Milton, Dante, and Lord Byron. His dramatic and imaginative scenes – often drawn from classic literature, the Bible, and the Divine Comedy – brought him widespread acclaim, leading to major commissions such as the illustrated English Bible (1866) and the publication of London: A Pilgrimage (1872). Honored with the Legion of Honour and celebrated internationally with exhibitions including a landmark show in London in 1867, Dore’s influential and enduring images continue to shape the visual understanding of many of history’s greatest texts.
