Charles Wilson Knapp (American, 1823-1900)
Charles Wilson Knapp was an American painter known for his pastoral landscapes, animal subjects, and coastal views, with scenes often set in New England and the Catskills. Active in both Pennsylvania and New York, he made his exhibition debut at the National Academy of Design in 1859 and continued to show his work there through the early 1860s before also exhibiting in New York. After returning to Philadelphia, Knapp achieved notable success when the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts acquired his landscape “Delaware Valley,” further solidifying his reputation as a skilled interpreter of the American countryside.
