Details:
Alfred R. Mitchell (1888-1972)
Alfred Richard Mitchell, born 1888 in York, Pennsylvania, was an American Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painter best known for his vibrant plein-air landscapes that document the early 20th-century growth of San Diego. After an adventurous youth in the West, he settled in San Diego in 1908 and began formal art training in 1913 under Maurice Braun, who encouraged him to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Daniel Garber and Edward Redfield. Influenced by the bold brushwork and strong color of the Pennsylvania school, Mitchell returned to California in the early 1920s, becoming a central figure in the region’s art community – serving as president of the San Diego Art Guild and helping to found both the La Jolla and Laguna Beach Art Associations. His outdoor working method and inclusion of local architecture make his paintings a significant visual record of Southern California’s development.
