Walter Thomas Sacks (American, 1901-1961)
Walter Thomas Sacks was an American painter best known for his landscapes, cityscapes, marine views, and mountain scenes rendered in oil, watercolor, and gouache. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Sacks was largely self-taught and balanced his artistic pursuits with careers in sales, manufacturing, and advertising. He owned the Sun Sign Studio, Inc. in Rochester, New York, and later served as advertising manager for the Independent Gas and Oil Company until his retirement in 1957. Painting throughout Western New York, Rockport, Massachusetts, and Quebec, Canada, Sacks earned numerous prizes and awards for his evocative depictions of rural and coastal life.
