Gabriel Vormstein (German, b. 1974) "Hyperpoesie 2"

2005. Watercolor on newspaper.

Catalog Note: This image could be the right half of the rock band, "The Misfits," logo. The skull is like a baroque version of Gabriel's skull images, on the other hand it is the image used of the band and singer "Danzig," who had been singer of The Misfits, and after splitting, he formed his own band. Gabriel liked to listen to the sound as a teenager a lot, and still likes the music so it's like (if both parts are combined in mind or origin) a face that shows different ages and states of being. The artist had also drawn a mouth and a nose in the painting. Mouth and nose should picture senses for emotional feelings as singing, tasting, or smelling.

Details:

Provenance Note: Charles E. Balbach (1934-2024) was a respected Western New York civic leader, arts patron, and dedicated collector whose leadership left a lasting mark on the region’s cultural institutions. A graduate of Harvard University, Balbach combined intellectual rigor with a deep commitment to public service and philanthropy. He served for more than two decades on the board of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum (formerly the Albright-Knox Art Gallery), including a term as President of the Board. During his tenure, he helped guide long-range planning initiatives and strengthen institutional stewardship at a pivotal moment in the museum’s evolution. A thoughtful and disciplined collector, Balbach believed strongly in public access to art and in the responsibility of collectors to support the institutions that sustain cultural life. His legacy reflects a lifetime of civic engagement, connoisseurship, and enduring dedication to the arts.

Gabriel Vormstein (German, b. 1974)
Gabriel Vormstein is a Berlin-based artist known for his paintings and installations that prominently incorporate newspaper as a primary material. His work often integrates found vegetation from the natural environment, creating a tactile interplay between organic forms and printed media. Vormstein studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under Silvia Bachlein and later became a master student of Andreas Slominski. Through these material contrasts, his practice explores themes of ephemerality, transformation, and the relationship between nature and culture.
