Details:

Ellen Carey (American, b. 1952)
Ellen Carey is a photographer, lens-based artist, educator, and independent scholar known for her experimental and boundary-pushing work spanning several decades. Her early Painted Self-Portraits (1978) were first shown at Hallwalls in Buffalo and later included in The Altered Photograph at PS1, placing her among avant-garde peers like Cindy Sherman and Robert Longo. Carey’s work was also selected by curator Linda Cathcart for The Heroic Figure, a traveling exhibition at the Sao Paulo Biennale (1984–1986) alongside artists such as Sherman, Julian Schnabel, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Her practice consistently explores the intersection of photography, abstraction, and portraiture, marking her as a significant figure in contemporary experimental photography.
