Alexander Oscar Levy (American, 1881-1947)
Alexander Oscar Levy was an American painter, illustrator, printmaker, and book designer known for figure, genre, and portrait subjects. Born in Bonn, Germany, he was brought to the United States at age three, settling in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy under Frank Duveneck, before continuing his education at the New York School of Fine Arts with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Levy later moved to Buffalo, New York, becoming an active figure in the Western New York art community as both a fine artist and commercial illustrator. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the Buffalo Society of Artists and exhibited during the 1920s at venues including the Salons of America, the Society of Independent Artists in New York, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
