John J. Inglis (American/Irish, 1867-1946)
John Johnston Inglis was an Irish-American painter best known for atmospheric landscapes and marine scenes. Born in Dublin, he studied at the Dublin Academy before continuing his training in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome and at the Academie Colarossi with Raphael Collin and Gustave Courtois. His academic training was later tempered by Impressionist influences, producing works noted for their refined compositions and luminous treatment of light. After beginning his career in London, he settled in Rochester, New York in 1907, where he became an important figure in the region’s artistic community. Inglis served as president of the Rochester Art Club, taught at the Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute, and was later named a director of the Memorial Art Gallery.
