Details:
George Gardner Symons (American, 1861-1930)
George Gardner Symons was a landscape and marine painter best known for his energetic, panoramic depictions of water, snow, and coastal scenes that blend Impressionism and Realism. Born George Gardner Simon in Chicago, he later adopted the surname Symons after studying in England, reportedly due to concerns about antisemitism. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he formed a lifelong friendship with painter William Wendt, and later painted with him in California and in Cornwall, England. Symons also trained in Paris, Munich, and London, and was influenced by plein-air painters at the St. Ives artists’ colony, including Julius Olsson and Adrian Stokes. He spent part of his career working in Chicago as a commercial artist before gaining recognition for his atmospheric outdoor paintings.
