Details:
Bessie Potter Vonnoh (American, 1872-1955)
Bessie Potter Vonnoh was an American sculptor celebrated for her graceful depictions of female figures and intimate bronze statuettes. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she moved with her family to Chicago, where she studied under Lorado Taft at the Art Institute of Chicago and joined his group of female assistants, the “White Rabbits,” for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Influenced by the small bronzes of Russian sculptor Paul Troubetzkoy, Vonnoh began creating her own delicate figurative works, gaining popularity for their elegance and subtlety. Encouraged by Taft, she traveled to Paris in 1895, and upon her return produced notable works such as The Young Mother, which exemplified her refined portrayal of women and maternal themes, securing her place in American sculpture.
