Details:

Jo Davidson (American, 1883-1952)
Jo Davidson was a portrait sculptor born to Russian parents on New York City’s Lower East Side, best known for his expressive portrait busts in marble, bronze, and terra-cotta. Though he exhibited in the landmark 1913 Armory Show that introduced modern art to America, Davidson ultimately pursued a largely academic approach to portraiture. Originally intended for a medical career while attending Yale University, he instead turned fully to art, studying at the Art Students League in New York and later at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne. Known for his outgoing personality, Davidson preferred to observe and converse with his subjects rather than have them formally pose, seeking to capture their character through personal interaction.
