Camille Alaphilippe (French, 1874-1934)
Camille Alaphilippe was a French sculptor known for monumental works and a recipient of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1889 for “Cain after the Death of Abel,” having studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens and Louis-Ernest Barrias. He collaborated with ceramists Alexandre Bigot and Jules Lavirotte on architectural decoration and created major public works including “Les Mysteres douloureux” (1905) in Tours and “Le Premier miroir” (1908) in Nantes. In the 1920s he worked in Algeria as head of the sculpture section at the Algiers School of Fine Arts, where he taught sculptor Andre Greck and continued producing commemorative monuments.
