Yvonne Canu (French, 1921-2007)
Yvonne Canu was a French painter born in Meknes, Morocco, who became known for her vibrant pointillist landscapes, marine, and harbor scenes. She studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and developed a distinctive style influenced by Georges Seurat and the Neo-Impressionist and Divisionist movements of the late nineteenth century. Particularly inspired by Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of Grande Jatte, Canu explored the interaction of primary, secondary, and tertiary colors through carefully placed points and touches of paint. Her work gained wider recognition after World War II, placing her within a generation of twentieth-century French artists who revisited and expanded upon the principles of Divisionism. Canu died in Paris in 2007, leaving a legacy of luminous, color-driven paintings represented in collections throughout Europe.
