Robert De Niro Sr. (American, 1922-1993)
Robert De Niro Sr. was an American painter associated with the New York School and Abstract Expressionism, known for blending gestural abstraction with traditional subjects including figures, portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Born in Syracuse, New York, he studied under Josef Albers at Black Mountain College and later with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, developing a style deeply influenced by European modernism and the sumptuous color of Henri Matisse. In 1945, his work was included in Peggy Guggenheim’s influential Art of This Century exhibition, and he held his first solo exhibition at the gallery the following year. Despite the rise of Pop Art and Minimalism, De Niro remained committed to a highly personal approach to painting that emphasized color, form, observation, and emotional subtlety. His work is held in major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Brooklyn Museum. He died in Manhattan in 1993.
