Claude Venard (French, 1913-1999)
Claude Venard was a French post-Cubist painter best known for his angular compositions, vibrant colors, and richly textured still lifes. Born in Paris, he briefly attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts before studying at the Ecole des Arts Appliques and gaining practical experience as a painting restorer at the Louvre Museum. In 1936, Venard exhibited with the Forces Nouvelles, a movement that advocated a return to traditional craftsmanship, but he soon developed an independent style that moved beyond the group’s increasingly figurative approach. His mature paintings combined geometric, post-Cubist forms with bold chromatic contrasts and thickly applied impasto, with his work becoming increasingly abstract during the 1950s. Venard achieved international recognition during his lifetime, and his paintings are represented in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musee d’Art Moderne de Paris, the Tate in London, and the Sao Paulo Museum of Art.
