Rare Abner Jones Mahogany "Giant" Empire Shelf Clock

| Lot #: 572 Rare Abner Jones Mahogany "Giant" Empire Shelf Clock |
|
West Bloomfield, New York, circa 1840. Figured mahogany full Empire case, column and cornice. Painted dial with original hands within reverse-painted glass spandrels, original mirror below. Unnumbered 8-day time and strike movement. A very late example, one of two late Jones clocks recorded with reverse-painted dial spandrels. This clock is the only example found to date with a “standard,” round dial with original painted-on-glass spandrels on the door, treatments so typical of other American makers but on no other extant clock by Jones, a total departure from the two-part dials found on other Jones clocks. This clock is detailed as Clock 3-B in the 2023 NAWCC publication Without Equal: The Clocks of Abner Jones of Bloomfield, NY by G. Russell Oechsle (pp. 15-154). |
