Fine & Rare Rodney Brace Mahogany Shelf Clock with Double Portrait Tablet

North West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, circa 1835. Double-door, double-column, cornice top shelf clock ca. 1835. Empire style in heavily figured mahogany and mahogany veneer in a unique, for Brace, combination of elements and dimensions. The tapered flat columns with Ionic capitals flank exceptional dial and tablet presentations. The hand-decorated dial with gilt chapter ring with a depiction of sheet music below the center arbor covers a Torrington-type 30-hour wood movement by Erastus Hodges of Torrington, CT, a common source for Brace. The most outstanding feature is the center, reverse-painted, “Bride & Groom” tablet by A. Canfield of Winstead, CT.

This clock appears in a full-page photo in Distin & Bishop, The American Clock pg. 126, and has been shown in a number of NAWCC publications and exhibits, including a cover photo in Torrington Clocks and Clock Makers (Lanzo & Brown, 2009).

Details:

Note: These tablets are painted in a singular, if not unique, style wherein each element is painted separately, rather than in layers, such that the tablet is rendered as nearly visually complete from the rear as from the front. Only a handful of tablets by Canfield are known, including several in other Brace clocks and at least two framed versions, including a variation of this theme sold by Potomack Co. of Virginia in 2016 for $3,250, and the painter’s Miniature Lady Liberty sold by Cottone in 2023 for a final price of $35,000.
